Talks &
Workshops

I strongly believe that research should be communicated as widely as possible, to a variety of audiences, and particularly to the general public. I have been a keynote speaker at conferences, taken part in public talks, workshops, lectures and panel discussions, as well as presenting at many academic conferences. I very much enjoy engaging with the media, particularly radio or television. I aim to disseminate engaging, clear, evidence-based communication about topical areas of interest at a level the audience will understand and enjoy.

I would be delighted to discuss delivering a talk or workshop for your organisation on a variety of topics. If you have something specific in mind, or if you would like more information on any of the topics below, please do get in touch to chat about it.

Some topics that I am very happy to speak about are:

  • Cyberpsychology – what is it and what does the research tell us about ourselves?

  • Communication online – how we connect with others, miscommunicate, and behave differently online.

  • Who are we online? How do we present ourselves and how do others see us?

  • Supporting online wellbeing in both adults and young people.
See below for examples of this work.

  • The psychology of why we fall for online scams and frauds.

  • Online dating and technology in relationships – both romantic and platonic.

  • How cyberpsychology can inform user experience design

– Fiona Jennings | ISPCC

The ISPCC was delighted to have Dr Nicola Fox Hamilton contribute to the ISPCC’s Digital Ready Hub initiative in Spring 2021. The Digital Ready Hub, supported by Vodafone Ireland Foundation, was envisaged as a one-stop destination for parents and carers seeking to support their children and young people to have safe and positive experiences online.

Nicola generously shared her time, insights and expertise in recording a series of video segments for the Hub on topics including how to talk to your child or young person about online harassment, online pornography and online dating. Her mastery of her subject area, coupled with the warm, empowering and supportive nature of her delivery, meant Nicola was a perfect fit for the Hub and a pleasure to work with. Nicola was subsequently a wonderful ambassador for the Hub on media, bringing it to the attention of parents, carers and the general public for all to engage and explore. The ISPCC would have no hesitation in working with Nicola again in future and thank her for her excellent contributions to the Digital Ready Hub.

– Hilary Mongey | Henkel Ireland

Nicola was the ideal presenter for our recent virtual talk. She gave a fantastic talk entitled The Psychology of our Online Lives. This gave a fascinating insight into the psychology behind our online behaviours and what makes us vulnerable to scams and online deception. Her presenting style is very natural, entertaining and very engaging. We highly recommend considering what Nicola has to say and inviting her to speak at your event!

– Jane McGarrigle | Webwise

Having worked with Nicola on a number of high profile events and national campaigns in 2021, we were very impressed with her valuable contribution. Nicola was incredibly engaging, relatable and provided key information and advice in a way that was accessible to a range of audiences. Event participants echoed this in their feedback to us following the events. We look forward to working with Nicola on future events and are delighted to recommend Nicola. Nicola is a pleasure to work with, organised, professional and most importantly really passionate about her work.

Recent work

Most recently I have worked with Webwise for Safer Internet Day 2021. I took part in a panel discussion and delivered a webinar to help parents empower their teenagers to maintain their wellbeing online. You can see the recorded webinar below.

Invited talks
& keynotes

Aha Festival. Lucerne, Switzerland, 2019. How do dating platforms decide whom I date?
Aha Festival is a festival of knowledge in Lucerne, Switzerland. The board of trustees have 20 interesting questions on a broad range of topics that they invite experts to answer. I was invited to answer the question “how do dating platforms decide whom I date?” For more information – visit aha-festival.ch/

EU Cyber Summit. The Helix, Dublin, Ireland, 2018. Why do we fall for scams: Lessons from cyberpsychology.
I was invited to give a talk and take part in a panel discussion at the EU Cyber Summit which many cyber security professionals attend. I shared some lessons from cyberpsychology on why we fall for online scams. Scammers manipulate basic human motivations, they utilise powerful principles of persuasion, and they take advantage of the fact that computer mediated communication changes how we communicate, and shifts our attention. You can see that recorded talk below. I also took part in a panel discussion taking a look at the problem of fake news and the impact it is having on democracy, and the question of the death of privacy in the age of the internet.

Insight Student Conference, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland, 2017. Keynote: Cyberpsychology: The humans behind the data.
In this keynote I talked about what cyberpsychology research looks at and how it’s connected to big data as well as differences in online communication. I looked at how technology has changed health particularly – in terms of health information seeking, online therapy and support, and the quantified self.

Conflux 2017, Dublin, Ireland. Connecting online: How Cyberpsychology can help UX Designers create better connections.
The Dublin UX Community gathered for Conflux 2017, organised by the UX meet-up groups Dublin UX, IxDAA Dublin, Dublin Design Thinking & Service Design, UXDX, Ladies That UX and UXTomorrow and sponsor CarTrawler.

I spoke about how UX designers could take what we know in cyberpsychology about how people connect online, and use it to help people make better connections through their designs.

Workshops

I design and run workshops on cyberpsychology and design for educators, academics, practitioners and non-designers. See below for more information.

South West Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force (SWRDATF)
Workshop on utilising the successful tools of online alcohol marketing to create better alcohol awareness and reduction campaigns. I have taken learnings from research in psychology and cyberpsychology and implemented it in different areas in order to improve communication with clients, or for practitioners to gain skills and awareness they might not have. For example the workshop for the SWRDATF, I used the research on successful online alcohol advertising campaigns, along with research on impactful online reduction and cessation campaigns, and combined them to create a workshop giving practitioners the skills they need to create better campaigns in their own areas.

RCPI & IADT
Workshops on universal design, design for presentations, designing academic posters, and data visualisation.

Design Workshops
As part of an initiative run by the IADT Teaching and Learning committee I have developed and run workshops on design for educators, academics and non-designers. The workshops involve learning about a variety of basic design tools through practical exercises that can help with designing teaching and presentation materials that communicate effectively and engagingly. The workshops can be geared towards designing teaching and learning materials with an emphasis on Universal Design to provide for all students including those with learning and other difficulties, or the workshops can be aimed at researchers designing academic posters, anyone who produces presentation materials and other other products that are visual in nature.

Poster design for academics – three half days or one full day practical hands on course.
Basic design principles, practical tools for layout, how to design a poster.

Universal design for teaching materials – half day or full day practical course.
Universal design principles, practical tools for layout, consideration of students with learning difficulties.

Designing presentations – half day or full day practical course.
Basic design principles, practical tools for layout, consideration of audience.

These workshops can be easily adapted for a variety of audiences – and one of them was recently incorporated into a training day for researchers and medical practitioners on data visualisation run by IADT for the RCPI.

Additionally, I have designed a number of shorter presentations which provide a brief but informative introduction to design principles and practical applications of them. These have been run for the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) Division of Teachers and Researchers, the PSI Student Affairs Group, and in IADT for both students and staff.
